Monday, August 31st, 2009

The recipient of widespread critical acclaim in the more than six decades since its release, Casablanca is one of the few films deemed as a cinema classic that actually lives up to the mega-hype surrounding it. The set design, costumes, and direction are absolutely flawless. The dialogue is superb. Bogart and Bergman are perfect as the lovers torn apart, and Claude Rains is unforgettable as Captain Renault. If you have an aversion to pre-1980 movies or some other strange reason for missing out on this one, then I highly encourage you to watch Casablanca. You wont regret it.

Sporting hilarious supporting appearances by Randy Quaid, John Candy, and supermodel Christie Brinkley (a Ferrari-driving blonde whose infatuation with Clark threatens to breakup the Griswold marriage), National Lampoon”s Vacation is the quintessential comedy classic. If you”re one of the few people on earth who has managed to miss this one, then I definitely recommend going out and renting it right now. Rated R (by 1983 standards; minus some brief nudity, it would rate as PG today), Vacation is a film you can feel comfortable watching with your children. After all, I saw it when I was five, and I turned out all right! Because of its status as a cult comedy classic, as well as its never-ending laughs, National Lampoon”s Vacation is a definite must-see film. Don”t miss it.

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

For most, instead of an Ipod, there would stand, pride of place in the Sitting Room or Parlour, a basic upright piano, of which at least one member would be able to read and play music, and the others would at the very least need to hold a whole gamut of decent notes to make the performance painlessly entertaining. The more savvy music publishers (yes they were printers and nothing more), realized early on that if they wanted to increase their sales they”d need to expand their market.

Michael Jackson’s Unique Birthday Lesson

Michael Jackson would have turned 51 years old on Saturday, and the late King of Pop had a different way of looking at birthdays, according to his Invincible album music producer.

"I was turning 25 and he said, ‘So you’re going to celebrate your mother, correct?’ — and I was like, ‘Huh, but it’s my birthday!’" Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, currently a judge on MTV’s reality series "Starmaker," tells ET.

"He’s like, ‘We need to celebrate your mother; she had you on your birthday,’" explains Jerkins. "And I had this big party and I celebrated my mother that day because Michael told me you should celebrate your mother on that day."

Dr. Murray Lawyer Requests Release of Full Autopsy

Ed Chernoff, lawyer for Dr. Conrad Murray, is asking authorities to release full autopsy results for Michael Jackson.

The L.A. County coroner’s office released the cause of death for Jackson ("acute Propofol intoxication" and "other conditions contributing to death: Benzodiazepine effect") and ruled his death a homicide on Friday, but declined to release the full autopsy report. In an interview with the Associated Press, Chernoff said that he needs to know the exact levels of drugs that were in Jackson’s system, and he’s not sure why the full report wasn’t released. He called the lack of releasing the full report "gamemanship," when he spoke to the AP.

According to the AP, the lawyer said his client was truthful with authorities, and that the findings in today’s release are in line with what his client told the cops.

New Details: How Michael Jackson’s Children are Doing Now

ET has the latest on how Michael Jackson’s children are doing since the sudden death of the King of Pop. Read on for details

A source tells ET that "Prince" Michael, Paris, and "Blanket" each has his or her own room at the Jackson family compound in Encino, Calif.

In daughter Paris’ room, a wall is adorned with photos and artwork of Jackson — and ET has learned that Paris herself has created some of the artwork in honor of her late father.

Attorney: Dr. Arnie Klein is Committed to Well-Being of Michael Jackson’s Kids

The lawyer to Dr. Arnie Klein, former dermatologist and friend to Michael Jackson, talks about his client’s connection to the King of Pop and responds to reports that Dr. Klein may be the biological father to Jackson’s two eldest children.

Attorneys for Dr. Klein were present at the custody hearing of Jackson’s three children on August 3. The doctor wanted a say over the education and care of the kids. The court found that Klein had no standing to make that request and his legal team left the courtroom.

"Dr. Klein doesn’t feel that there’s any need for him to persuade or prove one way or the other whether or not he is the de facto provider of the paternal biological source for those children," attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan tells ET.

Glendale Police Dept. Estimates Cost of Security for Michael Jackson Burial

A spokesperson for the Glendale Police Department reveals to ET the cost of security for Michael Jackson’s burial service to be held on Thursday, September 3 at Glendale Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The police department originally estimated that the safety measures for the service would cost an upwards of $50,000 when it was scheduled for Saturday, August 29. Now, due to the date changing to a weekday, a spokesperson tells ET that the cost may double or triple.

The increase in cost is due to a need for street closures from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. because of rush hour traffic, a school that will be in session across the street from Forest Lawn and the influx of media people covering the service. The Glendale police spokesperson says that these are situations that would not have needed to be considered had the burial service been held over the weekend.

HTV: Former Michael Jackson Lawyer: ‘It’s Tragic What Happened to Michael’

Thomas Mesereau, an attorney who successfully defended Michael Jackson in his molestation trial, spoke out to Hollywood.tv last night.

In this all new HTV video, when asked about his thoughts on allegations that doctors may have improperly given Michael prescription medications, he said, "I think the evidence has to be examined. I have not examined the evidence. If any doctor illegally prescribed him drugs, tried to manipulate him, tried to keep him under their control, they should be investigated and prosecuted. But you’ve got to look at the evidence. I don’t know what the evidence is."

Explosive New Details from Michael Jackson Insider

In a shocking new interview, holistic health practitioner Dr. Cherilyn Lee addresses explosive Michael Jackson allegations in a brand new interview with Diane Dimond.

Lee, who says she began working with Jackson in January, addresses the fact that her name is mentioned in an affidavit related to the investigation into Jackson’s death, and explains that she administered Jackson a vitamin cocktail. "In the Meyers cocktail is Vitamin C and B vitamins … no Diprivan … no Propofol — vitamins," she tells Diane emphatically.

She says she told Jackson not to trust doctors who would agree to administer anesthesia in his home, saying she told him, "Anyone that would give you this in your home [is] not concerned about you."

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Where would any serious discussion of contemporary Canadian rock be without including Nickelback, originally out of Hanna, Alberta, but now based in Vancouver. With smash hits like Photograph and How You Remind Me, its hard to come up with a more successful Canadian group over the last few years. Ontario based Shaker is an up-and-coming act that is beginning to show great promise. Their first full-length release, Throw Your Good Side On, is scheduled to be released this year (2006). Shaker reminds me of a less-bluesy version of The Black Crows, however, the inflection of vocalist Daniel Brooks is like nothing so much as a latter day version of fellow Canadian vocalist Tom Cochrane. Nelly Furtado continues to impress with her latest effort, Loose. As usual for Furtado, she continues to explore new ground with her songwriting and looks to continue doing so well into the future. Vancouver based Jakalope is an interesting act that fails to be categorized, alternately sounding like anything from The Smashing Pumpkins to Evanesence to a methed up Madonna, they never fail to be interesting. In the world of hip-hop, no Canadian group seems as poised for superstardom as Dead Celebrity Status. Their first album, Blood Music hit the streets to great reviews. Originally formed as a duo, Project Wyze, in 1988, they have since added mix-master DJ Dopey and have shared a stage with Ozzy Osbourne and Public Enemy. Their impressive performances have given them the juice to add appearances by Dave Navarro, Joss Stone and Bif Naked to their recordings. I failed to mention Crash Test Dummies, one of the more promising bands from Winnipeg, due to the uncertainty about their future status. They were enormously influential from about the mid-1990s to their last release in 2004. It is unfortunate that apparently artistic differences have taken their toll on the Dummies.
